Q: What is music metadata?
A: Good music metadata describes a music track concisely by defining its emotional characteristics, genre, instrumentation, tempo, composer and publisher information, along with a variety of other text fields. Simply reading good metadata should provide an approximation of what the music would sound like without actually hearing it.
Q: Why do I need music metadata?
A: By accurately describing each musical composition, the chances of being discovered for use in an appropriate project increases dramatically.
Q: What materials do you need from me?
A: We can work with a variety of digital master formats depending on what kind of work you need. If you’re just looking for metadata to be delivered via Excel spreadsheet or text, simple mp3s of the music files will do. If you require edits, we would prefer the highest quality, uncompressed masters you have. Let us know what you have access to and we can discuss options.
Q: When everything is done, what will I get back?
A: We can provide masters in a variety of formats based on what you’re able to provide us. We are able to provide metadata in an Excel spreadsheet, Soundminer embedded files, iTunes library files or ID3 embedded mp3s. It really all depends on your needs based on your distribution options.
Q: Why would I need 60 and 30 second edits?
A: Depending on your available distribution options and the style of your music, it may be wise to provide 60 and 30 second edits, most commonly for commercial use. International distribution many times require 60 and 30 second edits.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: This can vary considerably depending on what’s needed. Please get in touch so we can have a discussion regarding your needs so we can give you an estimate.
Q: Is there any upfront cost?
A: Under most circumstances, we will require half the estimate up front with the balance invoiced after final delivery.
Q: Will you get my music on TV?
A: We DO NOT provide any distribution or licensing opportunities of any kind. If you are still unsure of how to get your music licensed or do not currently have a distribution option for your music right now, let us know and we can discuss what you may need from us at this stage.
Q: I have an arrangement with a publisher/distributor. Can you still provide metadata services for my tracks?
A: Most publishers and distributors already have methods in place to catalog and edit your music. If you’d like to refer us to your publisher or distributor, please feel free to do so.
Q: I think I need this service, but I’m confused. Help?
A: Get in touch and we’ll help!
